Often when people are preparing for a cook out or BBQ they want to find the right bun or roll to bring that they hope the whole family will enjoy but then again whatever you are cooking will determine your bun right? If you’re going to have a normal hamburger you use and regular sesame seed bun but if you are going to have a thicker burger then its best to use a kaiser roll. Now I know what you’re thinking: What’s a Kaiser roll?

A kaiser roll is a crusty hard roll that comes from Austria is has many names such as Emperor roll, Vienna roll, Kaiser bun and hard roll. Kaiser rolls have been around since the 1760s thought to be named in honor of the Emperor (Kaiser) Franz Joseph I of Austria. After prices of rolls went up in the 18th century it was the Kaiser roll that stood out the most and because of that it was wanted all over the world especially now in the 21st century in delis and convenient stores.

Here are a couple of ways to use kaiser buns:1) Croutons: To turn a kaiser roll into a crouton it’s a pretty simple recipe. Buy the rolls obviously, then leave them out to harden, once the rolls are harden brush butter on all sides, then cut up the kaiser roll into pieces to be baked in the oven at 350 degrees until they are crunchy and golden brown. Wow that sounds yummy! 2)Bread Pudding: This recipe seems fun for comfort food or even for special events. First you want to break the kaiser roll into small little pieces and place in a baking dish, then drizzle some butter over the pieces, combine milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla is a separate bowl and pour over the kaiser roll pieces, bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 45 minutes, wait till cool and enjoy! This could be eaten as breakfast or a desert and you can add whatever topping you want like fruit, chocolate, caramel, maybe even some marshmallows!

Now I’m sure there are some people who want to learn how to make Kaiser rolls at home or at least are interested in doing so and there’s a pretty simple recipe thanks to Breadworld. First you want to get all your ingredients together water, butter, flour, sugar, yeast, egg and salt. Now you’ll pour the water into a large mixing bowl and then sprinkle in the yeast and let it rest for 5 minutes, after that add the rest of ingredients and start to mix them together until you have a soft dough, you’ll kneed the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 4-6 minutes forming it into a ball and letting it rest in a greased bowl until it doubles in size for 45 minutes..
